Project Summary: There have been several exciting discoveries in liquid crystal self-assembly recently, which have the potential for opening new perspectives on spontaneous chirality induction in non-chiral organic compounds and offer to provide a basis for new chiral materials for a range of applications. Rod-like molecules with more than one chain at each end can assemble in cubic and other 3D mesostructures that are highly optically active without the compounds being chiral, i.e. without the need of expensive asymmetric synthesis. In this project the Timisoara (ICT) team will synthesise novel types of nonchiral and chiral luminescent compounds whose self-assembly will be studied by structural and physical methods at both Nanjing (NJU) and ICT. Additionally, the NJU team will perform molecular simulation of the self-assembly to guide the synthesis and explain the experimental findings. The perfect match of expertise by the two leading groups in the field will ensure high added value of this interdisciplinary collaboration. Beside the scientific importance of the findings in the highly topical subject of spontaneous chirality induction by self-assembly, the result will help design new organic diodes that emit circularly polarized light. Such CP-OLEDs will e.g. halve the energy consumption of high-contrast AMOLED displays.
